What is the overcharge protection mechanism of Polymer Lithium-Ion Battery? Can it effectively avoid the risk of overcharge?

Publish Time: 2024-10-12
The overcharge protection mechanism of Polymer Lithium-Ion Battery is to ensure that the battery avoids overcharge (i.e. overcharging) during the charging process, thereby protecting the battery from damage, extending its service life, and ensuring safe operation. These protection mechanisms are usually implemented through built-in protection circuits or smart chargers.

1. Voltage monitoring

Detection voltage threshold: The protection circuit can monitor the charging voltage of the battery in real time. When the voltage reaches the set maximum charging voltage (usually 4.2V to 4.35V, the specific value depends on the battery design), the protection circuit triggers the protection action.

Prevent overcharge: Once the voltage exceeds the threshold, the protection circuit will immediately cut off the charging current and stop the charging process, thereby preventing the battery from continuing to charge and causing overcharge.

2. Temperature monitoring

Real-time temperature detection: The protection circuit integrates a temperature sensor to continuously monitor the temperature changes of the battery. Overcharge is usually accompanied by an increase in the internal temperature of the battery.

Overtemperature protection: When the battery temperature exceeds the safety setting value (usually 60°C to 70°C), the protection circuit will start and interrupt charging to prevent thermal runaway and potential safety hazards caused by overcharging.

3. Current limitation

Constant current charging: During the charging process, the smart charger uses constant current charging to gradually reduce the charging current to ensure that the battery voltage does not rise rapidly.

Stage charging: Using multi-stage charging technology, first charge with constant current to close to the maximum voltage, and then switch to constant voltage charging, so that the battery voltage slowly rises to the maximum value, thereby avoiding overcharging.

4. Overcharge protection IC

Built-in protection chip: Modern Polymer Lithium-Ion Battery usually integrates overcharge protection IC (integrated circuit) inside. These chips have functions such as voltage detection, temperature monitoring and current limitation, and can respond quickly and perform protection actions.

Automatic recovery function: Some overcharge protection ICs have automatic recovery function. When the overcharge state is released, charging can be automatically resumed to ensure the convenience of battery use.

5. Smart Charger

Smart Control: Using a smart charger, you can monitor and adjust the battery status in real time to ensure a safe and efficient charging process.

Charging Cutoff: The smart charger has a charging cutoff function. When it detects that the battery voltage reaches the set value or the temperature is abnormal, it will automatically stop charging.

The overcharge protection mechanism of the Polymer Lithium-Ion Battery includes voltage monitoring, temperature monitoring, current limiting, built-in protection IC and smart charger. These mechanisms can effectively avoid overcharging risks, protect the battery from damage, and ensure safe use under the premise of reliable design and quality. However, users still need to pay attention to selecting high-quality batteries and charging equipment, and perform regular maintenance to maximize safety and battery life.
